Indianapolis Motor Speedway During 250 Mile Race, Aug. 19, 1909

Description: Spectators stand right next to the track in this view of the main straightaway. In the distance a single race car can be seen approaching. The track was paved with a mixture of crushed stone coated with asphaltum oil. Track conditions deteriorated during the three days of races and there were several wrecks and some fatalities. See PAN0299 for the other half of this image.
The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order.
