Franklin J. Moore Letters, 1861-1863

Description: The five letters were written by Moore while serving in the 43rd Indiana Regiment, 1861-1863. The 31 October 1861 letter tells of the regiments forming and his being elected as Orderly Sergeant. The remaining letters were written to his brother and sister (B.T.W. Benson) in Bridgeton, Parke County, Indiana, 1862-1863. The letter of 24 May 1862 is written from near Fort Pillow and tells of the disease spreading through the camp which is killing more than the fighting. The remaining three letters were written from Helena, Arkansas. In the letter of 8 January 1863 he writes about the hope that the Emancipation Proclamation will speed up the wars end. On 12 February 1863 he discusses the possibility of raising a negro regiment. On 9 May 1863 he states he is pleased that Indiana has not seceded from the Union.
Franklin J. Moore was born in Parke County, Indiana, around 1838. He enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in October, 1861, as a member of Company K, 43rd Indiana Regiment and was promoted to a Second Lieutenant on October 4, 1862, and to First Lieutenant on October 17 of the same year. He was discharged in October, 1864. Moore returned to Parke County after the war and married Emily Moore in 1866. Around 1885 the Moores moved to Cowley County, Kansas.
