This diary details Hamilton W. Glezen’s Civil War experiences from 1861-62 when he was in the Union Army. The diary begins on October 1, 1861 with his marriage to Sarah Rose and ends in January 1862. Glezen writes of his recruiting duties for the first month at which time he was able to see his family and new wife. There is also information about camp life, family news including his concern for his wife’s continued ill health and information about caring for the sick and wounded as a member of the medical corps. Dr. Glezen was from Petersburg, Pike County, Indiana. He enlisted in the 58th Indiana Regiment where he served as a drummer until his skills as a doctor became necessary. The 58th took part in the Battle of Shiloh and the raid on Corinth, Mississippi. |
