Lawrence N. Cox Letter

Description: Lawrence N. Cox writes from New Orleans, Louisiana while with the 21st Indiana Regiment to his cousin, B.T.W. Bennson in Bridgeton, Parke County, 11 April 1863. In the letter he writes of his good health in comparison with those of his fellow soldiers. Cox also goes into detail regarding his views of the war, the leadership strength of Governor Morton, and the rumors that Indiana, along with Illinois and Ohio, is going to secede from the Union.
Lawrence N. Cox was born around 1842 in Parke County, Indiana, and in May, 1858, he married Eliza Martin. In July, 1861, he was mustered into Company I of the 21st Indiana Regiment. In February, 1863, he was transferred into Company I of the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery and was mustered out in July, 1864.
