Francis M. Kalley Letter

Description: The letter was written from Huttonville (West Virginia), dated 26 October 1861 to B.T.W. Benson in Bridgeton, Parke County, Indiana. He writes about the health of the regiment having deteriorated since they left Cheat Mountain, Virginia, and the number on the sick list has been increasing. He goes on to say that Parke County has distinguished itself in sending clothing and blankets to the unit.
Francis M. Kalley (b. about 1842) of Parke County, Indiana, enlisted as corporal in Company A of the 14th Indiana Regiment in June, 1861. He was promoted several times and ultimately became a captain in October, 1862. Kalley was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia on 13 December 1862. Another letter from Cheat Mountain, Virginia is in the collection.
