New Amsterdam

Description: The first school in New Amsterdam was a one-room structure built northwest of town ca. 1850. It served the local community until around 1870 when a two-room school was built. New Amsterdam established a high school in 1903. At one time some of the high school classes were held in the upper floor of the local lodge building. New Amsterdam High School was accredited in 1912, and around this same time a new two-story schoolhouse was built near the cemetery. High school classes were conducted on the top floor, and the grade school classes met on the first floor. A gymnasium was constructed partly into the neighboring hillside. New Amsterdam High School closed in 1950 and local students went to other area schools. The schoolhouse in New Amsterdam continued to be used for the lower grades until it was destroyed by fire in January 1954.
