Palmyra

Description: Palmyra’s first school was a two-room building constructed ca. 1875. Two teachers taught in the school, and enrollment averaged around twenty-five students. The town added a high school in 1910. This one-story, two-room, frame building was situated on Huff Street. A third room was added as enrollment required more space. Frank T. Reising, a Palmyra native, was the school’s first principal. Around 1919 Palmyra High School lost its accreditation and seniors had to attend other area schools such as Hardinsburg or Salem in order to graduate. About this same time, Morgan Township was constructing a large new school building south of Palmyra that would serve both grade and high school classes. As a result, surrounding smaller schools closed and sent their students to the new Morgan Township school. Palmyra, however, continued to maintain its town school for several more years. By 1945 circumstances had changed and Palmyra moved its seventh and eighth grade classes to Morgan, and in 1949 the school closed completely.
