New Middletown

Description: The town of New Middletown was plotted in Webster Township in 1860 and incorporated sometime later. A two-room, two-story school building was located in the western portion of the town and burned in February 1903. A new one-story, two-room building was then built on this same site and used until the 1914-1915 school term. While the new school was being built, classes were held in the local lodge building. In the Fall of the 1914-1915 term, the school moved into a new, four-room, two-story brick building that was constructed on the east end of town. New Middletown had established a high school by 1904. Initially, only one teacher taught in the high school with the later addition of one assistant. By 1913, New Middletown High School offered four years work. When the new school building opened in the Fall of 1914, there was still only one teacher. Senior students had to travel to Elizabeth or another accredited school to complete their coursework in order to receive a diploma. This situation was rectified in 1915 when New Middletown High School became accredited as well, and thus was able to produce its first graduating class in 1916. New Middletown High School continued to operate until August 1952, when it consolidated with the high school in Corydon.
