Laconia

Description: Laconia High School was organized in 1896 and held its first commencement four years later on May 4, 1900 for its eight graduates. Around 1909, a frame school building was constructed in Laconia and accommodated both grade and high school students. Several rooms were added to the building throughout its use and by 1932 it consisted of seven rooms. At this time 160 students, half of whom were in grade school and half in high school, attended the school. On March 15, 1932, fire destroyed this frame school building. Following this incident, high school students met in the local Ladies Aid Hall, and grade school students met in the local Odd Fellows Hall and private homes. A new one-story brick building was constructed and opened in Laconia in 1934 for both grade and high schools. In March of 1943 a small tornado severely damaged this building. The twister struck during the school day and demolished the gymnasium just moments after a class had exited. Fortunately, only a few students suffered minor injuries. While the building was being repaired, students again met in the Odd Fellows Hall and other buildings in town. In the mid-1950s Boone Township schools merged with those from Posey and Taylor Townships to form the South Central School Corporation. Construction of the consolidated South Central High School was completed in 1958 and opened to students that September. The high school at Laconia was discontinued at this time; however, the Laconia Grade School continued to operate in the 1934 brick building until the late 1980s when the consolidated South Central Elementary School was established.
