No. 05 - First state capitol at Indianapolis, Indiana

Description: The caption for this image, written in 1916 and provided by the Educator-Journal Company, follows:“5. In 1825 the seat of government was moved from Corydon to Indianapolis and an old court house standing in Marion County was used as a state house. In 1835 a capitol building of pure Grecian Doric architecture was erected at a cost of $60,000.”[The two-story, blue limestone building constructed in 1835 was inspired by the Greek Parthenon. During the 1860s, the structure had begun to deteriorate, and by 1870 had suffered a failing foundation and a collapsed roof. The building was razed in 1877.]
