Daniel P. Griffin and Governor Roger Branigan, Porter-Griffin House, 1966

Description: Daniel Patrick Griffin, seventh and youngest child of Patrick and Helen Porter Griffin, at the fireplace in the old kitchen of the Porter-Griffin home with Indiana Governor Roger Branigan (in office 1965-1969). The governor was visiting Corydon as part of the Indiana Sesquicentennial celebrations in 1966. The two-story brick dwelling just off the square in downtown Corydon, Indiana, was built in 1817 and served as the home and headquarters of Governor William Hendricks from 1822 to 1825. Judge William A. Porter and his wife Elizabeth McClelland purchased the house in 1841. They raised seven daughters in the home, and lost the four oldest to consumption within a five-year period in the late 1850s. The three youngest, Aurelia, Helen, and Attia, escaped the disease. Judge Porter and his wife continued to live in the large brick house until their deaths. Following Elizabeths death in 1872, their sixth daughter, Helen, who had married local merchant Patrick Griffin in 1871, moved into the house with her husband to make a home for her father. Judge Porter died in January 1884, and the house became owned by Helen Porter Griffin and her husband Patrick Griffin. The Griffins raised seven children in the home: Margaret, William Maurice, Mary Jane, Olive, Annis, Helen Elizabeth, and Daniel Patrick. Five of the seven never married and resided much of their adult lives in the Porter-Griffin house. Dan, pictured here with Governor Branigan, was the last to live in the home. After his death in 1975, the State of Indiana acquired the property to be used as a historic site.
