Description: |
Patrick and Helen Porter Griffin sit near the fireplace in their home, the Porter-Griffin house, on East Walnut Street in Corydon, Indiana, ca. 1908. Helens image is reflected in the mirror above the mantle. The couple were married in 1871 and moved into Helens childhood home in 1872 after her mother died. Patrick and Helen resided in the family home the remainder of their lives, 1917 and 1940 respectively. They raised seven children in the home, four of which resided there throughout most of their adulthood. The youngest child, Daniel P. Griffin, was the last of the family to live in the house, and died in 1975 at age 90. The house then became the property of the State of Indiana, which operates it as a historic site. It was renamed the Governor William A. Hendricks Headquarters to reflect its earlier history as the home and office of Indianas third governor. |
