West bridge, Corydon, 1949 accident

Description: Photo of the West bridge over Big Indian Creek in Corydon, Indiana, after it collapsed following a traffic accident in 1949. The view is to the north and shows the bridge collapsed on rockbed of the creek. In the early morning hours of December 23, 1949, a semi-truck carrying a heavy load crashed into the bridges iron superstructure on the west side. The bridge, built in 1917, collapsed and had to be removed. A temporary wooden bridge was constructed at the site; however, it would be over 19 years before a new permanent bridge was constructed and opened to traffic in June 1968.
