Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: This is a multi-paneled cartoon depicting some of the ways in which scam artists are using the war and rationing to steal money. In the top right, a man standing in front of a shelf of goods and wearing an apron paints out one price on a sign and replaces it with a higher one. In the top center, a man sitting at a desk holds up a sign. In the top right, a man walks out of a doorway wearing a suit and carrying several bundles. A woman stands in the doorway, looking anxiously after the man. In the center, a gas station attendant pours water from a hose into the pumps supply. In the bottom left, a burglar wearing a mask and carrying a large sack comes in through the window of a bedroom. A woman is lying in the bed and looking at the intruder in fear. He tells her that he is an FBI man. A small dog is sleeping on a pillow next to the bed. In the bottom right, a man is nailing a sign to the side of a building, possibly his house. He holds a hammer in one hand.

A little boost now and then will be big coin for me. And other businesses. 11 cents [crossed out]. 12 cents. So what? If I cant get gas! Well toodle doo! Now dont scream, Im just an FBI (fib)man investigating. And the saps will think theyre not patriotic if they dont buy or kick in. WAR BENEFIT. Part of [illegible]. Be wary of drives and benefits not properly sanctioned. Even then some promoters chisel receipts. Sorry lady but I have to take all over 5 pounds. Beware: There are no sugar or like inspectors as some gyps will claim. And so by claiming to be a preacher I can ask for tires for my auto. This is a house of worship. Even this--says the state rationer. And many such others.
