Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: A newspaper clipping describing a recent accident is pasted onto the top left. To the right and below this clipping is a scene showing precautions that should be taken to ensure that stop signs cannot be obscured by parked cars or other obstacles. Below this panel is a scene depicting a car turning left despite a no left turn sign on the stoplight. In the center panel a judge rebukes a man, presumably a careless driver, from the bench. At the top right is a panel depicting an official-looking man seated at a table or desk telling a man standing next to him that his traffic offense is excused because he could not see the stop sign. In the panel below, the same two men are shown, but here the official insists on investigating the mans claim. In the bottom right is a text panel warning out of town drivers to be especially careful in unfamiliar areas.

Traffic Tragedy. Elderly man crushed to death beneath auto as it overturns after death. Parked car blamed. Obscured stop sign at Fares and Virginia. An automobile accident at Fares avenue and Virginia street yesterday. THEN--then the expense of every precaution for safety is worth wile. If an 8 foot high sign can be obscured then add other signs as--painted on street--or the rubber flop sign set in street. STOP. No parking to corner. Have these at all stop streets. Enforce it. With no left turn sign we have seen... This week a new coat of paint on Main Street traffic lights eliminated the no left turn sign,--but they are being repainted. Look. That blinding lights excuse is out--drivers know lights blind--then drive accordingly--with care. No Excuse. Ignores stop sign, gets suspended fine. Did not see it, he said. Out of town drivers knowing their town problems, signs, etc., should drive more carefully in strange unknown towns and expect and look for signs at every corner. For excuses do not restore life. Care helps to preserve it. I couldnt see the stop sign. Excused. ??Investigation?? Come on well go out and see if you couldnt. --Or why he couldnt or didnt.
