Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Women pushing shopping carts rush toward the shelves of a supermarket aisle. They are excited because several items which had been unavailable during the war are now back in stock, such as pepper, pineapples, and bananas. A man who is also shopping in the store points to a scene in a bubble showing a crate containing a giraffe being lowered off a large ship by a crane. The giraffes head and neck stick up out of the crate. The man says that if they are importing a live giraffe, it makes sense that other items would also be available. Knechts elephant says that 300,000 pounds of silk have been imported from Japan.

Pepper, real pepper! First Ive seen in my 3 years of housekeeping. Just in from Africa. To Ohio Zoo. And pineapples--and marshmallows, and coconuts, and bananas--any olive oil? Instant coffee. Any salmon? Andy why not! When theyre bringing such in. And--300,000 pounds of silk from Japan.
