The file contains two documents related to the suit the United States brought against the Berry family for larceny of stealing over $1124 worth of merchandise of dry goods. During the July Term 1806 Knox County Court of Common Pleas the grand jury indicted Benjamin Berry, yeoman; Francis Berry, yeoman; William Berry, yeoman; Sarah Berry, spinster; and Jane Berry, spinster; late of the Township of White River on May 20, 1806 with force and arms took four pieces pieces of laced muslin, value fifty-two dollars; two pieces colored muslin, valued at sixteen dollars; one dozen damask silk shawls, of the value of eighteen dollars; three dozen tamboured muslin shawls, of the value of thirty one dollars; one gross shirt buttons of the value of one dollar; eight pair of angols gloves,value of five dollars; one dozen steel topd thimbles, of the value of seventy five cents; two pieces cambric, valued at forty-two dollars; three pieces chintz, of the value of sixty-five dollars; two dozen handkerchiefs, of the value of six dollars; eleven pair of womens silk hose, of the value of thirty-five dollars; thirty damask shawls, of the value of two hundred twenty dollars; eighteen common Barcelona shawls of the value of seventy dollars; seventy-two pair of ladies slippers, the value of one hundred twenty one dollars; two pieces cambric muslin, of the value of thirty-three dollars; one piece cross barred taffeta of the value of twenty eight dollars; four pieces two-dozen and eight madrass handkerchiefs, of the value of thirty four dollars; four dozen cotton half hose, of the value of forty-seven dollars; two pieces fine fancy chintz of the value of thirty-six dollars; three pieces cambrick muslin, of the value of forty-five dollars; one and a half dozen muslin shawls of the value of twenty-six dollars, one dozen fine muslin handkerchiefs of the value of ten dollars; nine elegant silver mounted trays, of the value of twenty-three dollars; four pieces of madrass handkerchiefs of the value of twenty six dollars; four pair fashionable gold ear rings of the value of twenty-three dollars, four elegant breast pins fashionable fine gold of the value of thirty dollars; thirteen pieces super fine silk and cotton India stripe of the value of sixty-three dollars and four loaves sugar weighting twenty six pounds of the value of thirteen dollars; of the goods and chattels of Guy Bryan and William Morrison. Signed B. Parke Attorney General In Tt. On the verso side, a true bill, James Scott, Foreman Thomas Jones prosecutes this indictment. The second document was a Summons for the sheriff to take Benjamin Berry, Francis Berry, William Berry, Sarah Berry, and Jane Berry so they would appear before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas on the last Monday of November 1806 to answer unto the United States for larceny. According to the Minute Books of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, pages 12, 56, 71, 98, 144, 174, 193, 216, 233, and 253, the suit was continue from the March 1807 until July 1810 when the attorney stated the case no longer continue on the docket unless specially called for. |
