United States vs Elias Bedell Jr.

Description:	This file contains the documents related to charges brought against Elias Bedell Jr. for assault and battery on Squire Patterson on December 3, 1809. The first summons was for Elias Bedell Jr. to answer to the indictment. This summons was witnessed and signed by court clerk Robert Buntin on August 13, 1810 and executed by sheriff John McCandless for $1.06 1/2 cents. The indictment states that Elias Bedell Jr., a laborer, did beat and wound Squire Patterson and is signed by Thomas Randolph, Attorney General of the Indiana Territory. There is a signed statement on the recto of the indictment by Bedell that he is not guilty of the charges. The verso of the indictment notes the the jury found the defendant guilty and is signed by John Evers. The second summons calls for Squire Patterson to come before the Court of Common Pleas. This summons was witnessed and signed by court clerk Robert Buntin on July 30, 1810. The summons was executed by sheriff John McCandless for $1.00 1/2 cents. According the the Minute Book of Common Pleas, 1807-1810, page 253, dated August 31, 1810, the defendant was found guilty and fined $1.00 and was to remain in custody of the sheriff until the fines and costs were paid. Members of the jury were Jacob Decker, Kean Fields, Thomas Ruby, Joseph Adams, Charles Simpson, Booker Shields, William Meeks, John Evers, John Mills, Henry ONeil, John Fisher, and Samuel Baldwin.
