Jones, Thomas vs Zachariah Chicotte

Description: This file contains the documents related to a suit Thomas Jones brought against Zachariah Checott for non-payment of a debt for the purchase of divers, goods, and wares. The documents include a summons, a complaint, a promissory note, and a confession. The summons was for Zachariah Checott to appear before the Court of Common Pleas on the last Monday of November, 1809 to answer unto Thomas Jones. The summons was witnessed and signed by court clerk Robert Buntin on September 19, 1809, and executed by deputy sheriff John McCandless at a cost of $3.24. General Washington Johnston, attorney for the plaintiff, asked for $250 bail on Checott. The promissory note is dated March 27, 1807 and was for the purchase of various items including calico, mulberry cloth, gun locks, bells, and a juice harp. The items totaled $206.62 1/2 cents plus $27.88 in interest from March 1807 to August 11, 1809. The verso of the promissory note indicates that on April 1, 1804 interest was due. The complaint by Jones against Checott asked for $300. The confession is dated January 29, 1810 and has the mark of Zachariah Checott and was witnessed by John McCandless. On page 234 in the book of The Court of Common Pleas, March 19, 1810, The defendant, Checott, was ordered to pay the plaintiff, Jones, $242.09 plus costs and charges.
