Solomon Hays vs Claudius Coupin

Description: Transcript by Robert Buntin of the suit Solomon Hays brought against Claudius Coupin for slander and asking damages of ten thousand dollars. Solomon Hays sued for a writ of Capias ad respondenum against Claudius Coupin to answer to plea of Trespass for slander and damages of ten thousand dollars. The writ was witnessed by James Johnson, February 18, 1801 and executed by Wm. Prince, Sheriff. May Term 1801, Cause continued. August Term 1801, Solomon Hays with General W. Johnson, filed Declaration, Claudius Coup in custody, his attorney was Henry Hurst. Hays complaint claimed that his good name was demeaned by defamatory words of Coupin who said, have you heard that the Jew, Mm. Solomon Hays stole a quantity of money at Michinmaccinac from a man called Bonthelia, also a silver watch which he sold in this country and which was marked. He sought damages of one thousand dollars, by General W. Johnston. The cause was continued to next Term. November Term 1801, the parties and their attorneys appeared. The Defendant produced a writ of Certiorari for the judges of the Territory and the cause was removed to the General Court.
