Roman Spitz vs Joseph Antoine Sheffold

Description: Joseph Antoine Scheffold is ordered to appear at the Court of Common Pleas to answer to a plea of damages from slander. On June 18, 1854 the plaintiff and defendant come to court and after hearing explanations and informing them of their rights they failed to reconcile signed R. H. Clements, Judge of the Court of Conciliation. Scheffold is to appear the 3rd Monday in June 1855. He is accused of saying slanderous words against Louisa Fredericka Wilhemina Spitz. Scheffold is accused of saying That the plaintiffs wife was pregnant with a boy and that the husband must pay him for it saying that he had impregnated her. They are to appear before a Court of Conciliation before the Honorable R. H. Clements, Judge of Common Pleas. Roman Spitz by his Attorney W. A. Jones who asks that a subpoena be issued. On May 21, 1855 a subpoena was served by reading and the cost of $1.36 was charged. John and Minda Zuber, Andrew Lowgill, William Raper and wife are issued subpoenas. Judah and Denny, the attorneys for the defendant, ask that a subpoena be issued for John Yates, John Williams, Henry Beckman, William Beckman, John G. Miller, George and Joseph Schaller and Leonard Ashley. On June 7, 1853 a subpoena by William Denny, Clerk is issued. Witnesses are to come to court on the third Monday, June 1855 to give evidence on behalf of defendant Joseph Antoine Shefford. A subpoena for John Zuber, Minda Zuber, Andrew Lowgill, William Raper and his wife was issued on May 21, 1855. They are to give evidence on behalf of the plaintiff Roman Spitz. A subpoena for John Wise and Emma Peck to give evidence on behalf of plaintiff is issued on June 19, 1855.
