Description: This is the Grand Army of the Republic application of Hiram Steele, dated May 4, 1899. Hiram first enlisted on August 20, 1861 as Sergeant in Company K 31st Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was discharged on July 20, 1862. Hiram re-enlisted on May 4, 1864 as Lieutenant in Company D 133rd Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was discharged on September 5, 1864. Hirams application was recommended by Lawrence Burget. Examining Committee members were John C. Haas and Carl Krietenstein. Applicant Elected and Mustered May 18, 1899. No. on Des. Book: 739. James W. Haley, Adjutant; Post Commander information omitted. NOTE: Last name on front of application spelled Steel.
