A Confederate saber captured in battle and brought home to Terre Haute, Indiana as a souvenir from the Civil War. The makers mark on the blade, just above the grip reads A. W. Spee Warranted. The saber scabbard and hilt of the weapon are made from brass with ornate floral decoration. The grip of the saber is made of ivory carved in a spiral pattern. The guard is made from steel coated in brass. The scabbard includes two belt rings and a set of tassels, also brass in color. The blade has a steep curve and is made from steel. The surface metal has been treated and blued into nature related patterns with vine and leaf shapes. Two gold inlay areas punctuate the blade bluing. They are shaped like plants, spears, a flag and a shield with stars and stripes. |
