Socket bayonet, 1861-1865

Description: A triangular bladed socket bayonet, 1861-1865. The scabbard is made from steel and is triangular to accommodate the blade shape. It has an external hook for a belt. The scabbard has been severely bent and has acute rust damage. The bayonet blade has a soft patina and has been well protected by the scabbard. Its socket is made to fit over the end of a rifle barrel and has notches to lock it into place. It also has a screw so that it can be tightened for long engagements. The sockets black coating has been rusted through and has been roughed by corrosion.
