Civil War: Model M-1860 Cavalry Saber, 1864

Model M-1860 Cavalry Saber, 1864

Description: A Model M-1860 cavalry saber created by the Mansfield & Lamb Company out of Forestdale, RI in 1864. The sword has a long, curved and heavy blade that features the makers mark acid etched into one side of the blade and U.S., 1864 on the other side. The guard is cast in brass and has a leather stopper between it and the blade to protect from the steel of the scabbard and prevent moisture from reaching the steel of the blade. The blade continues into the grip and down to the pommel where it is riveted down which adds stability to the weapon overall. The handle is wrapped in soft leather but it is missing its brass trimmings of woven metal for the grip. The scabbard is solid steel and blackened with age and exposure.
