BrightRetired Division Vice PresidentElectrical Specialties Division3M CompanyAustin, TexasRobert Bright has served at the executive engineering management level for 3M Company, a $17billion diversified technology company with operations in 60 countries. From the beginning of his 3Mcareer, Bright was involved in the development of new products, processes, and organizational structure.After graduating from Rose-Hulman in 1957 with a bachelor of science degree in chemicalengineering, Bright joined 3M as a project engineer and designed, fabricated and procured equipmentrelated to new chemicals and products. Following a two-year assignment in the United States ArmyCorps of Engineers, Bright returned to 3M to provide engineering support to a new 3M venture in thearea of nuclear products. Several promotions followed and Bright held various positions includingpilot plant supervisor, production manager, and plant manager. He was appointed GlobalManufacturing Director of Printing Products and Industrial Graphics divisions in 1973.Bright was promoted to Executive Director of Staff Manufacturing in 1983. In that position, heestablished programs used corporatewide and assisted all 3M divisions to solve their manufacturingproblems. His first division vice presidents position was in the engineering systems division. Thisassignment included global management of all functions from development and manufacturing tomarketing. He also served as vice president of the document systems division before his last assignmentas division vice president for electrical specialties division. He retired from 3M in 1994. Bright hasserved as a member of the Rose-Hulman Board of Trustees since 1991.Doctor of EngineeringRobert J . CooneyRetired Director of Public Works for the State oflndianaand formerly Director ofUtilities and Chief Engineerof the Indiana Public Service CommissionNaples, FloridaAfter serving in World War II in the counterintelligence section of the United States Army in thePacific. Robert Cooney earned a bachelor of science degree from Rose-Hulman in 1948 and began adistinguished civil engineering career. After working as an assistant transmission engineer for the OhioPublic Service Company, Cooney returned to his native Indiana as a senior engineer and project managerfor the construction of the Indianapolis Water Companys major storage area, Morse Reservoir.In 1961, Cooneys career shifted to city and state public works and utility projects. He served asDirector of Public Works for the State of Indiana during which he supervised several hundredemployees and managed a $400 million budget. Cooney was in charge of the maintenance of stateownedbuildings and all new construction, except for roadways and university projects. Cooneyreceived citations for his engineering expertise from state government officials. In 1971, Cooney wasappointed to analyze the structure, procedures and staffing of the engineering unit for the Indiana PublicService Commission.At the age of 53, Cooney completed law school at Indiana University and passed the bar exam. In1985, a few years after retiring from the engineering profession, Cooney joined the Indianapolis law f1rmof Linder and Hollowell. He retired from his law career in 2000. Cooney has been honored as anEngineer of Distinction by the National Engineers Joint Council, and was named a Fellow by theAmerican Society of Civil Engineers.Doctor of ScienceRobert]. FischerMathematics TeacherHoney Creek Middle SchoolTerre Haute, IndianaRobert Fischer is an extraordinary teacher who has instilled in his students the desire to achieveexcellence that has led them to national recognition as some of Americas best young mathematicians. Ateacher with unsurpassed energy and dedication, Fischer uses academic competitions to stimulate learningand supplement the excellent classroom instruction he provides his middle-school students. His teamshave won the Indiana Mathcounts competition championship for 17 consecutive years. In 1995, hecoached the Indiana team to a national Mathcounts title. The Fischer-coached Indiana team in 1997 wasnational runner-up, ~nd 10 of his state teams have finished in the top 10 in the national fmals.Fischer has also coached middle-school mathematics teams to 30 state championships incompetition sponsored by the Indiana Mathematics League. Since initiating a mathematics contest forfifth and sixth graders in the Vigo County School Corporation in 1986, over 4,000 students haveparticipated in the annual event.His work to encourage young students to excel has gone beyond mathematics to chess and tennis.For 22 years, Fischer coached and sponsored a chess program at Woodrow Wilson Junior High Schoolin Terre Haute which produced four national championship teams. Fourteen of his teams won Indianatitles. Fischer has coached middle-school tennis teams to 25 undefeated seasons and 35 Vigo Countychampionships. Fischer has been honored by the Indiana Association for the Gifted, Indiana StateUniversity, the Terre Haute Area Chamber of Commerce, and the United States Chess Federation. Hehas also been named to the Indiana Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame. Fischer received his bachelors andmasters degrees in mathematics education from Indiana State University.Doctor of EngineeringRichardT. Miyamoto, M.D.Arilla Spence Devault Professor and Chairmanof the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck SurgeryIndiana University School of MedicineIndianapolis, IndianaThousands of people have had their hearing restored as the result of a medical breakthroughachieved by Richard Miyamoto and his colleagues. Miyamoto is a member of the medical team thatdeveloped the first successful cochlear implant. The implant is an electronic device that restores a levelof hearing to the severe-to-profoundly hearing impaired. It is surgically implanted in the inner ear andactivated by a device worn outside the ear. Patients who have had hearing and lost it, or those whohave never heard, have benefited from the cochlear implant.Miyamoto has received numerous honors from American and English organizations for hisprofessional achievements. His research expertise is in the area of speech perception, speech productionand language development in children with cochlear implants. He is president of the AmericanNeurotology Society and president-elect of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology. Miyamotoserves on the executive committee of the American Auditory Society, and is a director of the AmericanBoard of Otolaryngology. He is also a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the NationalOrganization for Hearing Research and the Ear Foundation.He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan, the masters degree from the University ofSouthern California and his bachelors degree from Wheaton College. He has twice been named theOutstanding Professor in Clinical Sciences at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Miyamoto hasfrequently served as a guest lecturer to Rose-Bulman students enrolled in biomedical engineering.Doctor of EngineeringWilliam D. SchindelPresidentInternational Centers for Telecommunications TechnologyTerre Haute, IndianaDuring his 30-year engineering career, William Schindel has contributed to improving theperformance of the system engineering process in aerospace, telecommunications, automotive andenterprise systems. He is co-founder and president of the International Centers for TelecommunicationsTechnology, a professional services company specializing in complex systems technology transfer licenses,products, and knowledge-based technology services. ICIT, a joint venture with Rose-Hulman, targetsthe telecommunicati_ons, complex process manufacturing, and large-scale property management markets.In 1998, he founded System Sciences which publishes and licenses intellectual assets in the field ofcomplex systems.In 1974, Schindel co-founded Applied Computing Devices which supplied embedded anddistributed systems for improving the performance of global telecommunications carriers. He led thedesign of hardware and software of embedded processors that were installed in one-fourth of the NorthAmerican public switching nodes. The company was a pioneer in large-scale automated domestic andinternational carrier network operations centers and systems. In 1985, he co-founded Aleph ParkCorporation, a not-for-profit economic development organization, that initially planned and developedAleph Park which is now the home ofRose-Hulman Ventures.Schindel earned the bachelors and masters degrees in mathematics from Rose-Hulman. He hasserved as a member of the Rose-Hulman faculty and as director of the colleges Edward Watersacademic and administrative computing center. He developed new courses in computer science,electrical engineering and mathematics. Rose-Hulman honored him in 1982 when it presented him withthe colleges first Distinguished Young Alumnus Award. Schindel was elected to the Rose-HulmanBoard of Trustees in 1984.Doctor of EngineeringDavid 0 . SwainSenior Vice President of Engineering and Technologyand President, Phantom Works, The Boeing CompanySeattle, WashingtonIn his role as senior vice president of engineering and technology, David Swain leads the BoeingEngineering Process Council with the objective of lowering cost and increasing performance byestablishing standards, common tools, best practices, and by growing technical experience. As presidentof Phantom Works, the research and development organization of Boeing, he leads an organization that isdedicated to advancing the companys competitiveness through technology development, processimprovement and new product development.Prior to his current assignment, Swain was vice president of engineering for The Boeing Companyand executive vice president of Phantom Works. He has also served as vice president and generalmanager of advanced systems and technology-Phantom Works for McDonnell Douglas, the researchorganization that was the prototype for the merged research and development operation.Swain joined McDonnell Douglas in 1964 as an engineer on the manned Gemini project. In 1972, hemoved to Tactical Missile programs and worked on the Tomahawk and Harpoon/Standoff LandAttack Missile. In 1987, he became vice president and general manager for strategic businessdevelopment for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Co.An Indiana native, Swain received a bachelors degree in aeronautical engineering and an honorarydoctorate in engineering from Purdue University. He has received the Aerospace Engineering LeadershipAward from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Laurel Award from Aviation Week for thesuccessful first flight of the C-17 Globemaster III. He is an associate fellow of the American Institute ofAeronautics and Astronautics. Swain also serves on the board of directors of the National ActionCouncil for Minorities in Engineering.Fifty-Year Commemorative DegreesFor one hundred and twenty-seven years, Rose-Hulman alumni have been makingpositive contributions to society as engineers and scientists. Success has not been limitedto their career areas. They serve their local communities through civic organizations, youthactivities and churches.Much of the recognition Rose-Hulman enjoys today is because of our alumni.Rose-Hulman graduates make an impact.
