BogardusRetired Vice President for Academic Affairsand Dean of the School of Arts and SciencesTri-State UniversityPensacola, FloridaFrederick Bogardus has had a distinguished career as an engineer and educator.His work in the engineering field began at Scott Paper Company where he served as amechanical engineer. He was also assistant director of the Engineer Board during WorldWar II. In that position, he worked with the Corps of Engineers to develop pipeline andbridging equipment. He has served as a consultant to IBM in the area of stress analysis.In 1947, Bogardus became a faculty member in the mechanical engineeringdepartment at Purdue University, where he achieved the rank of professor. In 1962, hewas named dean of the faculties at Tri-State University, Angola, Indiana, and later waspromoted to vice president for academic affa.irs and dean of the School of Arts andSciences. During his tenure at Tri-State University, he led successful efforts to achievenational accreditation for the universitys engineering programs.Bogardus earned a mechanical engineering degree from Rose Polytechnic Institutein 1932. He received the masters and doctorate in mechanical engineering from Yale andPurdue universities respectively. He is a recipient of the Rose-Hulman Honor AlumnusAward for service to the colleges alumni association and has served as president of theassociation.Doctor of EngineeringErnest R. DavidsonDistinguished Professor of ChemistryIndiana UniversityBloomington, IndianaProfessor Davidson has made significant lifetime contributions to the theoreticalunderstanding of molecules and chemical reactions. He is an award-winning teacher whohas authored nearly 400 scientific publications and contributions to books that haveexpanded the knowledge about physical chemistry. These contributions appear in acontinuing series of advances in computational methods and theoretical interpretations.His honors include election to many prestigious academic organizations such asthe United States National Academy of Science. He is a Fellow in the American PhysicalSociety, American Association for Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts andSciences, and the Indiana Academy of Science. Davidson has also been honored as aSloan and Guggenheim Fellow. He serves as the editor or associate editor of severalimportant scientific publications, including the Journal of Chemical Physics, TheoreticalChemisuy and Quantum Chemistry. ..Although he has produced many papers explaining specific aspects of particularmolecules of interest to experimental chemists, his greatest contributions have beenimproving the tools with which ab initio calculations are done and changing the wayquantum chemists approach problems and view their results . Davidson earned hisbachelors degree in chemical engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1958, and adoctorate in chemistry from Indiana University.Doctor of Humane LettersMari Bulman GeorgeChairman of the Board andPresident of Bulman & CompanyChairman, Indianapolis Motor Speedway CorporationTerre Haute, IndianaIn addition to being well-known in the international world of automobileracing , Mari Bulman George has received considerable recognition for herphilanthropic support to important human services programs and civic organizations.Her work has resulted in significant improvements in education, health care and thearts. She has been honored for her tireless efforts on behalf of the Indiana SpecialOlympics, the Humane Society and League for Animal Welfare. She is also nationallyknown for raising and racing thoroughbred and quarter horses.Her membership on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Board ofTrustees continues her familys strong commitment to the development of RoseHulmanthat began over a century ago. The Bulman family was instrumental in thefounding of Rose-Hulman in 1874. She is the daughter of the late Anton Bulman, Jr.,and Mary Fendrich Bulman, who were major benefactors to the institute. Her son,Tony Bulman George, also serves on the Rose-Hulman Board of Trustees.She is on the board of directors of several organizations including the TerreHaute First National Corporation, Methodist Health Foundation, the Humane Society ofIndianapolis, and the National Art Museum of Sport. George is also on the advisorycouncil of St. Vincent Hospital and a t~ustee of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.Doctor of Humane LettersFrank OBannonGovernor of IndianaIndianapolis, IndianaFrank OBannon was inaugurated as Indianas 47th governor on January 13,1997. His distinguished career in public service includes 18 years as a member of theIndiana Senate where he served for nine years as Senate Democratic floor leader. In1988, OBannon was elected lieutenant governor in the administration of GovernorEvan Bayh. Bayh and OBannon were re-elected in 1992 by the largest margin inmodern Indiana history.In his first year as governor, OBannon led a successful effort to cut taxes formiddle- and lower-income Hoosiers and to reduce property taxes by $148 million. Healso established a blue-ribbon commission to make the state s entire mix of taxessimpler, fairer and less reliant on the property tax. At his urging, the Indiana GeneralAssembly, for the first time, allocated state funds specifically for alternative schools,which remove disruptive or unmotivated students from regular classrooms and offerthem more innovative and individualized instruction. He also persuaded the legislatureto fund 500 more police officers across every level of gm·ernment state~·ide.OBannon was elected chair of the National Conference of LieutenantGovernors, chair of the Midwestern Governors Conference and vice-chair of theDemocratic Governors Association. A native of Harrison County, Indiana, he ischairman of the OBannon Publishing Company in Corydon, and before election tostatewide office, he practiced law, in Corydon.Doctor of EngineeringRobert SteinhauserHead of the Department of Mechanical EngineeringHerman Moench Distinguished Professorand Professor of Mechanical EngineeringRose-Hulman Institute of TechnologyTerre Haute, IndianaProfessor Robert Steinhauser is truly a master teacher. He has been a memberof the Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty at Rose-Hulman Institute ofTechnology for the past 41 years. His dedication to his students and engineeringeducation is unparalleled.Steinhauser has been chosen a record four times as the institutes outstandingteacher. In 1980, he was honored by being named the Herman Moench DistinguishedProfessor. In 1987, he received the Honor Alumnus Award for service to the RoseHulmanAlumni Association.Steinhauser received the bachelors and masters degrees in mechanicalengineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute and Stanford University respectively. Hejoined the mechanical engineering faculty at his alma mater in 1957. He has served thepast 23 years as the head of the mechanical engineering department. During histenure as a department head and teacher, Steinhauser has provided the inspiration andexpertise that has guided the mechanical engineering department through anunprecedented period of outstanding development.He is a gifted teacher who has served as an outstanding role model for faculty,students, alumni and professional engineers.Doctor of EngineeringAlexander ]. VoglChairman and Chief Executive OfficerWilton CorporationPalatine, IllinoisAlexander Vogl is a successful business executive who has also held importantposts with several educational and business professional organizations. He is the topofficer of a privately owned corporation that is a diversified manufacturer of industrialtools and equipment, and tools for the consumer market. Wilton Corporation has fiveplants located in Illinois, Ohio and Massachusetts.Vogl was born in Czechoslovakia and served in the United States Navy prior toenrolling at Rose Polytechnic Institute. He joined Wilton Corporation shortly afterreceiving a degree in mechanical engineering from Rose Poly in 1949. His successes assales manager led to a promotion to vice president of the corporation in 1955. Voglwas later named president of Wilton in 1959.In addition to his duties as a chief executive, Vogl has been elected tonumerous leadership positions as an officer or board member of business andeducation-related organizations. He is a longtime member of the Rose-Hulman Boardof Trustees, and a life trustee of Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Vogl is aformer chairman of the board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago. He hasserved as president of the Chief Executives Organization, the Chicago PresidentsOrganization, and of the Hand Tools Institute. He has also been a director of DeanFoods Company and Clark Foodservice, Incorporated.Fifty-Year Commemorative DegreesFor more than a century, Rose-Hulman alumni have been making pos1t1vecontributions to society as engineers and scientists.
