Hill-Mershon polygonal barn, Parke County, Indiana.

Description: This is a color photograph of the Hill Polygonal barn, also known as the Hill-Mershon barn, in Bloomingdale, Parke County, Indiana. It is an eight-sided wooden structure, 30 feet in width, with a sectional conical roof, an octagonal cupola with louvered vents and a cone roof. Two storied, the bottom floor was originally used to house small livestock while the upper floor was used for storage of feed, hay and straw and was accessed by a wooden staircase. William Hill, one-time professor at the University of Chicago became head of the Bloomingdale Academy in 1905, had the structure built soon after on property he owned on School Street. Hill was the builder of the first circular barn in the Carthage, Indiana area and introduced the concept to Isaac and Emery McNamee in 1900 who were responsible for several built throughout Indiana. The barn was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1993. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
