Portrait of S.W.Stuart (1856-1932), who was a native of Terre Haute with Lost Creek family connections. Born near Charleston, Illinois, the son of a free African American father, and mother who was a former slave, he received his education in Terre Haute schools and at the Indiana State Normal School, and served as principal of the racially-segregated 10th (later Booker T. Washington School) and 12th District Schools (later Lincoln School) in the city for 35 years. A talented musician, he performed with Musical Harp Circle (1880s) and also formed and led the Stuart Quartet (1887), Stuarts Parlor Orchestra (1890), and was chorister of the Allen Chapel Choir in Terre Haute from 1887 to circa 1924. He was the first master of Prince Hall Lodge No. 16 of the Free Masons, in Terre Haute, and Grand Secretary of the state organization. Uniting a number of interests and efforts, he was instrumental in establishing the new Booker T. Washington School. |
