Joseph Jackson of Terre Haute, Indiana

Description: This photograph appears to be that of Joseph Jackson (1855-1919), African American educator and religious worker of Terre Haute, Indiana. According to the biosketch in the preface to his unpublished diary, he was born a slave in Goochland County, Virginia, from which place he and his parents were sold in 1859 to a new owner in Davies Co., Kentucky. His family left Kentucky during the Civil War and settled in Terre Haute in 1864. He attended school irregularly while he worked to support his family, but eventually entered Terre Haute High School, from which he graduated with high honors in 1881. He began a teaching career and was promoted to principal of the 14th District School in 1890. He was a member of the Prince Hall Lodge No. 16 Free Masons of Terre Haute, and became its master in 1909. He was Superintendent of Allen Chapel AME Sunday School for 10 years and organized the Rising Mission AME Church in his own home, on October 2, 1892. The church later became known as the Spruce Street AME Church of Terre Haute
