Knox County court record for State of Indiana vs. Hammond, 1833

Description: Folder 4215 in Box 77 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains only one document in the case of State of Indiana vs. Vincent Hammond. During the September term of Knox County Circuit Court of 1833 a true bill was passed against Vincent Hammond, a man of color for killing a boy of color, Zachariah Davis. The indictment goes into great detail to describe the attack on Davis by Hammond. The attack occurred on July 24 and Zachariah languished with severe injuries until he died on August 12, having suffered for 19 days. The jury charged Hammond with manslaughter. Three witnesses were named on the document but there is nothing in the file about testimony any of them gave or whether they were eye witnesses or material witnesses. They are listed as Benjamin Myer, Joseph Acton, and Joshua Davis, a man of color who may have been a relative of the boy. The document states that was moved and seduced by the devil. There is no further information as to the outcome of this case.
