Folder 2229 in Box 38 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds five documents in the case of Julia vs. Evan Shelby. This case was about Julia, a fourteen year old mulatto girl trying to gain her freedom from Shelby. In her statements she referred to the North West Ordinance of 1787 saying it did not apply to her as the document of servitude she had signed in North Carolina had a thirty day expiration date and it was sixty days before Shelby brought her to Knox County. The documents in the folder consist of three statements of plaintiff and defendant and two subpoenas for John Weathers, Esq. to appear as a witness for Shelby. This case is related to Lucy vs. Isaac Shelby found in Box 29, folder 1774 of Knox County Circuit Court files |
