Knox County court record for State of Indiana vs. Henry Springs, 1832

Description: Folder 4029 in Box 73 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains four documents in the case of State of Indiana vs. Henry Springs. During the September 1832 term of the grand jury of the Knox county Circuit Court the jury indicted Henry Springs, a man of color on a charge of petty larceny. He was charged with taking “two chickens of the value of fifty cents, two hens of the value of fifty cents, two cocks of the value of fifty cents” from John McClure on February 10, 1832. After hearing witnesses John McClure, and two more witnesses, Abraham Ritchey and Pompey Hubbs, both men of color, the jury found Springs guilty. He was given a fine of one dollar, imprisoned him in the county jail for 25 hours and “disenfranchised him for the term of twelve months”. The documents in this folder consist of the grand jury report, indictment, summons for Springs, and jury verdict.
