A Knox County record for tavern licensure shows a license for Esther Bazadone for 1812-1813. Bazadone, a Black woman, was the first woman of any color to license a business on Vincennes. It is possible that her clientele was largely Black soldiers of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Other names of licensees on the document include; Laurent Bazadone Blanchette Malletts husband, Christian Graeter, William (Will) Birch. |
