Knox County court record, Burtch recognizance, file 1, 1841

Description: Folder 5485 in Box 102 of Knox County Circuit Court Records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds one 1841 document seeking to have Crittendon Burtch appear in circuit court to face a charge of assault and battery. Witnesses include Dinah Walker “of color.” While Crittendon Burtch is not identified as being Black, Folder 5486 of Box 102 holds a like document seeking to bring William Burtch, (identified as “negro”) into court. The dates on both documents are the same as is the purported victim of the assault, one George Gray.
