Knox County court record for Beamon vs. McClure, 1820

Description: Folder 2529 in Box 44 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds 2 documents in the case of Beamon vs. McClure. This case was about the sale of Grace Johnston, a woman of color and her child Sally Ann to Carter Beamon for which he paid Archibald McClure $600. The sale and transfer took place in Louisville on Dec. 1, 1819. When Beamon found that Grace and her daughter were from New Orleans and had been freed in 1819, Beamon filed a complaint with the court against McClure to pay back the money. The documents consist of the court filing and the capias warrant on McClure. Grace is mentioned in File 2512, Carter vs. Smirl.
