Knox County circuit court record for Dickson vs. Beamon, 1820

Description: Folder 2400 in Box 42 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds 5 documents in the case of Dickson (Dixon) & Wilson vs. Beamon, 1820. The case was a debt litigation. Beamon had borrowed money from Dickson & Wilson for the purchase and delivery of a negro man named Nathaniel, called “Nat”. The note was given to James Smirl (or Swirl) who was to purchase Nathaniel in Louisville Kentucky and transport him to Louisiana. Beamon claimed that at the time of the purchase Nathaniel was a free man by the laws of the U.S. constitution and laws of the state of Indiana and not the slave or servant of James Smirl, therefore he should not be charged for his debt. The jury found for the defendant. The documents consist of statements made by Beamon, Smirl, Dickson and Wilson; a receipt for the two notes, and the subpoena for Beamon.
