Description: |
Folder 2454 in Box 43 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds two documents in the case of Heirs of Wm. Welton vs. Ebenezer Welton, 1820. This case involved heirs who claimed that the administrator did not conduct an accurate inventory. The court pointed out that “two children of colour, offspring of a woman of colour” were not accounted for. The woman had indented herself under the Act of 1807 in May, 1810 and she with her children were living on the farm at the time of Wm. Welton’s death and should have been a part of the inventory and sold, and accounted for by the administrator Ebenezer Welton. The court ordered a summons for Welton. The documents consist of the court instructions and the appeal of Ebenezer Welton. |
