Knox County circuit court record for Myers vs. Franky, 1819

Description: Folder 2380 in Box 41 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds 6 documents in the case of Myers vs. Franky, woman of color. The 1819 case is about Franky (aka Frances), a slave/servant who ran away from John Myers; “absented from his said service and lurks about the society commonly called Shakers,...” She was arrested and sent before a Justice John G. Reilly before whom she had previously appeared. She requested a change of venue to a Justice she felt would be more impartial. It was granted and she ended up in front of Elihu Stout. In the documents are statements from both Myers and Franky, and statements by the justices involved in the case directing constable James Nabb where to transport her. Also in the file is a recognizance bond signed by Robert Gill, William Davis and Franky.
