Knox County court record for Ewing vs. Wells, 1818

Description: Folder 2105 in Box 35 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds five documents in the case of Nathaniel Ewing vs. Peter Wells. This case was for debt litigation. Nathaniel Ewing claimed that Peter Wells purchased a bay horse worth $40.00 from John Landau, a man of color who Ewing claimed had stolen from him. Ewing refers to a “new law special act of 1807” part of which stated that purchasers of stolen property are to pay four times the cost of item’s normal value to the owner. He claimed that Well owed him $150.00 plus bail cost of $20.00. Documents in the file consist of Ewings statement, a subpoena for Peter Wells, subpoenas for witnesses Wm. Breading, James Thrailkield, George Ewing, and Jonathon Thomas, an affidavit of Ewing, and a statement from Attorney, J. Dety, regarding damage of $150.00.
