Description: Folder 1765 in Box 29 of Knox County Circuit Court 1818 records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds twenty-four documents in the case of Ma-son-pe-con-gah vs. Thomas Jones. Ma-son-pe-con-gah (The Owl) a chief of the Miami Tribe sued Thomas Jones to return his property which included a mulatto child named Polly, a saw and chattel all of which had been entrusted to Jones for a period of time. Jones refused to return the child. Documents in the file include a bail bond of Thomas Jones, sixteen summonses, a court bill, a receipt of trial court transcripts, a request for a new trial, complaint filed by “the Owl” against Jones, two statements by counsel for Jones, and a statement by Jones declaring he was not guilty regarding the child Polly who was placed in his care.
