Description: |
The probate record for William Welton, 1815 is in Box 5 of the probate records archive at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House. On the list of items the widow (Mary Welton) selected was 1 negro woman (unnamed) valued at $237.00. She is listed again on the estate inventory sale bill. On an appraisal sheet of items “appraised and not sold” 2 negro boys are listed as “Ben” $150.00 and “Bill” (born after 1810) $100.00. A document accusing the administrator, E.Welton of failing to list the boys on inventory and sale sheet which meant their value had increased the value of estate, not reported correctly. This may or may not be connected with prevailing servant and slave law at the time. |
