The entire meeting was devotedto the general business of the society.Robert Hoffman was elected treasurer for theterm. Crim and Hahn are on the programcommittee. Messrs. Robert Hoffman, AndrewMercker, Casper Crim, George Hahn, CliffordBlackman, Rollie Dobbs, Luther Troutman,Charles Burton, Glenn D. Brown and JohnShotwell are in school this term.PHILOMA THE AN.The Philomathean Literary Society had itsfirst meeting of the new year, Saturday morning, Jan. 9th. Almost all of our last termsmembership returned as well as one of ourolder members, Miss Hazel Davis.We have planned a good program for thisterm—a continuation of the study of the English novel. Moreover, we are working on ourplay.Each member is showing a splendid spirit,and beginning her work with enthusiasm. Weextend a hearty wish for a Happy New Yearto all.TROJAN.The first meeting of the Trojan Literary Society was held Monday, Jan. 4, 1915, for thepurpose of organizing the work of the comingterm. All the members of last term were present. The following officers were elected: R.Shannon, president

J. C.Tranbarger, corresponding secretary, and J.Henderson, reporter to the Advance.Last term the work of the society proved tobe very successful. But this terms work is expected to be even more successful. The societywill debate the inter-state question Thursday,Feb. 4, 1915.GERMAN CLUB.The war has not placed a quietus on. theGerman Club, for it has been conducting meetings on Wednesday afternoons as usual. TheFall term opened with a musical program, andthere have been several kinds of meetings. Mr.Mutterer read to the members on a few evenings
once Miss Lederer told of her experiencesin Germany this summer after the outbreak ofthe war, and sometimes the meetings have beendevoted to singing new songs.All good Germans know how to celebrateChristmas, and the members desirous of beingtermed echt deutsch, had a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Christmas carols weresung, and gifts were distributed to the guests.As we read in the society columns of our worthynewspapers, two features of the afternoonwere a piano solo by Margaret Welte, and avery dramatic performance of The Blue Bird,produced \>y the following troup of accomplished actors: John Koch, Hilda Hathaway,Inez Kelley, Lawrence Scheidler, Mary LouiseJaenisch, Emilie Zobel and Rachel Schafer.Refreshments were served, and at the close ofthe meeting it was voted to collect the gifts, andboth the tree and the gifts were given to theSocial Settlement to help make brighter someother peoples Christmas. The guests wereMiss Cox, Miss Schweitzer, Margaret Welte,Gertrude Zobel, Mr. Schockel, Mr. and Mrs.Weng, and Mr. Mutterer.The first meeting of the Winter term was amusical meeting at Mr. Mutterers, and all students of the German department were invited.
