194THE NORMAL ADVANCE§?, W. anb f. Jfl. C S.F. IF. (7. A.The Y. AA7. is doing splendid work alongthe lines of membership. The association isdivided into two sections, the Blues and theAA7hites. Each side is doing good work. TheWhites are being led by Winifred Ray, who isthe kind of enthusiastic worker that makes forvictory. The Blues are coming up with agoodly number under the able leadership ofMary Sheets, who works untiringly. The losing side will entertain the winners as soon asthe contest closes. The time has been extendedbecause of the break in the work caused by theadverse conditions at the beginning of theterm. The meetings of the past month have beenfull of interest. On account of the rush ofwork at the time, Miss Warren, the Social Settlement worker, failed to appear at the firstmeeting of this term. The next meeting, however, was one of especial interest and was verywell attended. Mrs. AVisely talked to the girlsabout the Camp Fire Circle and how it may beuseful to us in our work as teachers. On April8, the meeting was conducted by Miss BelleSmith, one of the cabinet girls, and was greatly enjoyed by the big bunch of girls who attended. We were especially glad to have withus Miss Helen Jewett, who rendered a solo inher usual pleasing manner.Y. M. C. A.The Y. M. C. A. has been loyally supportedthis term bv the bovs of the school. Its membership is more than one hundred and the loyalsupporters of the other organizations areamong its most energetic workers. In returnfor this splendid support and good feeling theassociation has tried to be of practical value. This term it has been especially successful inaiding Mr AVestphal in finding desirable roomsfor the boys of the school. Two meetings havebeen held. Profs. McBeth and AVestphal, together with the presidents of the various organizations of the school, made short addresses. These were followed by a general eat and asocial time. Prof. Kelso addressed the secondmeeting. His subject was, Panama and theAdjoining Territory. This meeting was ofespecial interest, and was well attended. Thejoint reception was postponed the first weekon account of teachers examination and conditions in the city made it seem unadvisable tohave it Friday, April 4. The reception willprobably be given soon after the opening ofthe second spring term. The association regrets that its president, Mr. Wright, was forcedto resign. His resignation was accepted Friday, April 4. His successor has not yet beennamed. Boys, we, as a body, are the Y. M.C. A. AVe suport and constitute it, not somuch for the good it does us, as for the benefitderived by the other fellow. So lets remember that the greatest Y. M. C. A. work is donewhere there is an individual need, and that tosupply this need quickly and quietly is puttingin the best licks for the Master and, incidentally, is reaching the very essence of Y. M.C. A. work.Be not the first by whom the new are tried,Nor yet the last to lay the old aside.—Pope. |
