Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE17WITH the calling of the mass meeting byProf. Gillum on October 4, athleticswere started for the year of 1912. Remarkableinterest was shown in the meeting, both by thestudents and the faculty. Profs. Gillum, San-dison, Baxter, Kemp and Lynch, made somevery interesting talks, telling of the ways bywhich athletics are fostered in other schools,and urging the students to support athleticshere, both by joining the Athletic Associationand by attending the games. They were followed by Bill Unverferth with the customaryspeech, A Winning Team. The meeting wasfurther enlivened by the old-time yelling ledby Mac (McCloud).The nominating committee for nominatingthe candidates for the Athletic Associationwas then selected. The last years treasurerwas ordered to start the campaign for members,and with this the meeting adjourned.At the election of October 18 the followingofficers were elected: President, R. W. Hyndman

Custodian Noble Wilson.Coach Westphal is very optimistic in regardto the basketball outlook. He has Unverferthand McCullough, both crack players of lastyear,as a nucleus about which to gather a team.Hiney Knauth of the City Y. M. C. A. is almost sure to make the pivot position if he livesup to his previous reputation. With the beginning of the winter term we will probablyhave Slim Sarter and Vermillion, both Nmen of last year. Manager Wright is busymaking out the schedule and our first gamewill probably be played on our floor withMerom Christian College.During November the interclass contests willbe held. Coach Westphal is busy every daytraining the men in track work and basketball.The event will be termed the Interclass CiderMeet, from the fact that the losing classeswill be compelled to buy a keg of cider for thevictors.Much interest is being shown in the outdoorwork and cross country running course now being given. The first run was given in connection with Rose Poly. The two hares carryinga bag of shredded paper with which to lay thetrail were given ten minutes start of thehounds. The course covered about four miles,over fences, cornfields, plowed ground, and thebed of a creek. The following Normal menparticipated: Wright, Fortner, Rightsell andMartin, with Fortner finishing second.
