Description: 216THE NORMAL ADVANCEOratory and DebatingDAEDALIAN-FORUM DEBATE.The Daedalian and Forum Debating Societies furnished the first number of the series ofdebates and oratorical contests, which is scheduled for this term, when they met on April16, in Normal Hall and fought out the issues ofthe question, Resolved, That United StatesSenators should be elected by direct vote of thepeople. The Daedalian team, speaking on theaffimative, was the victor, but only after puttingup one of the strongest fights ever seen at Normal, for the Forum team, two of whom aremembers of the Varisty trio, did not let anyarguments of the affirmative pass without athorough grilling. The evils of the present system were thoroughly aired, the affirmative holding that deadlocks, and, as a consequence, the lack of representation part of the time, the dishonesty andscandals, in the Senate, due to the lack of feeling of responsibility on the part of the Senators to their constituents, were the outgrowthof the present system, and that by direct votethe greater part of this would be eliminated. This was met by the negative arguing that bydirect vote the very principle on which theSenate was formed would be destroyed, andthe conservatism, so necessary in times of danger, would be removed by the election of inexperienced men, who would have the worry ofactively building fences to secure re-election.The negative also offered amendments to thepresent system which would improve it andstill allow the Senate to be the conservativebody it ought to be.The arguments of the respective debaterswere well worked out and delivered in a verydetermined and forceful manner. One of thenoticeable features of the speeches was the excellence of the diction and the careful articulation. The best of feeling prevailed in thelarge audience and each man came in for hisshare of applause. The excellence and success of this debate hasaroused the interest of the students in this lineof work and the next of the series is beingwaited for with great expectancy. That thedebaters from Normal, 111., will meet menworthy of their steel is now a settled fact. The audience was also favored with two excellent solos by Miss Minturn and a piano duetby the Misses Guffigan, which were highly appreciated and. generously applauded.Following is the program of the evening:1.
