SCHLICHER HIGHLY HONORED.Dr. Schlicher has been highly honored bybeing chosen one of a committee of fifteenwhich is to make a uniform course of study inLatin for the high schools of the country. Thecommittee is chosen from the memberships ofthe classical associations of the United States,four members being from the New EnglandStates, four from the Middle States, and sevenfrom the Middle West and Southern States. Atthe meeting of this committee, which will probably be held in the spring or summer, an attempt will be made to outline a uniform courseof study in Latin for high schools, which willbe of such a standard as to be accepted unconditionally as entrance requirements by all thecolleges in the United States. Considerablemisunderstanding and disagreement has arisenheretofore on account of the varied requirements of Latin for entrance in the various colleges, and the results of this attempt to removethe lack of uniformity will be watched withgreat interest by all educators.LINCOLN DAY.Appropriate exercises were held at NormalFriday morning, February 12, in honor of theone hundredth anniversary of Lincolns birth.Special music was rendered by the chorus andan eloquent address was delivered by Dr.Francis H. Shepherdsen of Chicago University.A general half holiday was given the studentsin the afternoon.Dr. Shepherdsens address, The Mastery ofMen, was a forceful review of the life andcareer of the emancipator, in which he saidthat the keynote of Lincolns greatness lay inhis power to overcome without humiliating.Invariably he retained the friendship of thosewhom he had defeated.In speaking of Lincolns educational advantage he said young men of the present day havecomparatively unlimited opportunities andthat the burden of failure rests largely in theirown heads.But, after sifting it down, I must admit,he said, that after all personality counts foreverything. I do not care how many doctorsdegrees you have from the foremost universities, you will never be a great teacher or statesman or anything else if you have forgotten thesimple, primary characteristics of personality.This personality, he declared, came to himthrough the pioneer life of his forefathers andhis own extensive experience with actual humanity and struggles on the frontier.ORATORICAL LEAGUE.The Oratorical League is preparing to givethe student body, and the general public, aseries of interesting and helpful contests in theline of debating and oratory. The Philoma-thian, the newly organized ladies literary society, has been voted into the League. Mr.Field was elected Treasurer of the League tofill the vacancy caused by the absence of Mr.Porter, who is not in school.Inter-Normal Contest.As a result of the inter-class contest held onJanuary 22, Messrs. Schorling, Farris, Morrill,and Cain were elected members of the Varsitydebating team to meet the team from Normal,111., on the City Government question. Thiscontest will be held some time in June. Thelocal team has the affirmative of the question.Inter-Society Contest.A series of inter-society contests has beenplanned. The first of the series will be a Forum-Daedalian debate to be held on Friday evening,April 16. The question will be chosen withinthe next few days. Immediately after this contest another will be arranged with the thirdsociety. A contest between the two ladies societies will probably be arranged soon.Oratorical Contest.The oratorical contest which was to havebeen held this term will probably be postponeduntil sometime next term. Students are stillurged to take part in this contest as it is opento all. |
