Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE29Items of Especial InterestHENRY-CURRY.On Wednesday, October 14, Miss BerthaCurry, until recently Head of the Departmentof Physical Culture for Women, was united inmarriage to Dr. Alfred Henry, of Indianapolis.The wedding was strictly private, only theimmediate relatives of bride and groom beingpresent.Miss Curry was exceedingly popular withthe student body, and as a token of their highesteem the Faculty presented her with a beautiful wedding gift. Dr. Henry is a graduateof I. S. N., class of 1902, and has a wide circleof admiring student friends.The young people went immediately to theirnew home in Indianapolis, with the best wishesof their many friends for a long and prosperous married life.ORATORICAL LEAGUE.The Oratorical and Debating League organized at the close of the last school year, hasbeen reorganized with the following officers:President, Wm. Treasurer, E. B. Porter.It has been planned to have a series of contests during the year. Definite plans are nowunder advisement for an inter-class debate.Arrangements are also being made to have anoratorical contest during the winter term andan Inter-Normal debate in the spring. Oratory and the art of public speaking has notbeen emphasized in our school until recentlyand it is the purpose of the League under thesupervision of Prof. J. L. Lardner, head of theDepartment of Oratory and Public Speaking,to place us in line to successfully compete withany school of equal standing.There is at present a great demand for logical public speakers, and we look forward to theorganization of the debating society in ourschool with great expectations. We hope tosee a new generation go forth not only armedwith a magnificent and superb education, butable also to utilize it in the places where aneducated man is called upon to make use ofhis power in defence of right and securingjustice—anywhere and everywhere—lucidlyand carefully expressing the judgment he hasformed.LOCALMr. Leslie Childress and Miss Edith Glennwere visitors October 16. Mr. Childress isPrincipal of the high school and Miss Glennhas the seventh and eighth grades at Fairbanks.Mr. Ritter Whitesitt was called to his homein this city October 10, by the serious illnessof his mother.Miss Kate Moran, who had charge of theseventh and eighth grades in the trainingschool last year, has entered the educationaldepartment of Columbia University where sheis doing special work.Dr. Dryers geography classes made a trip toClinton, October 3, to study the formation ofthe gravel pits in that vicinity.Prof. Rettger and family left for Baltimore, September 3, where Prof. Rettger entered Johns Hopkins University and willspend a year doing graduate and researchwork in physiology. Miss Winifred has entered the Girls Latin School in Baltimore.
