30THE NORMAL ADVANCEMr. Oscar Schopmeyer was called home Oct.17 by the death of his cousin.Mr. Hosea Lovelace, who was a student lastyear and a member of the varsity basket ballteam, spent October 14, renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Lovelace had just returned from atrip through the Dakotas and expects tospend the winter in New Mexico.The Democrats of I. S. N. have organizedunder the leadership of Guy Bogart and aretaking an active part in the campaign. Anattempt is being made to form a marchingclub.The First Baptist Church tendered a reception to all the students of the city, October16. Many of our students were in attendanceand report an enjoyable time.The Board of Trustees has purchased twolots on either side of the library and the houseson them will soon be torn down and movedaway. It is planned to convert the lots intolawns and thus open up the side views to ourbeautiful new library which are at the presenttime completely obstructed by the residences.Messrs. Christopher Cauble, 08, and RossSmith, 07, were visitors October 10. Mr.Cauble teaches History and English in theParagon High School and Mr. Smith is Principal at Nora, Ind.Mr. James Fagan spent October 10 at I. S.N. and incidentally subscribed for The Advance. Mr. Fagan says he could not do without it.Mr. Ray Cromwell, 08, stopped off for oldtimes sake October 15, while on his way toKokomo, where he has a position in the highschool.Miss Mamie Coats was a caller October 8.She is teaching at Otterbein, Ind.Miss Marian Sammis was compelled to go toher home in Sullivan October 9, on account ofillness.The school authorities have decided to beautify our campus and they have taken the firststep by removing the diagonal walks andsodding their sites.Prof. Clippenger has again taken up hiswork after a years leave of absence, which hespent at Harvard.Messrs. Chester Zechiel and George W.Youngblood visited I. S. N. September 25.The members of our Faculty spent the fewweeks of the summer vacation in various ways.Dr. Dryer gave a course of lectures at OxfordUniversity in England Prof. Mutterer traveled through Greece Prof. Kemp enjoyed thescenery of Colorado, and Prof. Wisely visitedsunny California. Professors Cunningham,Weng, Higgins, Baxter and Swihart were atthe lakes in Michigan Dr. Schlicher in Wisconsin, and President Parsons at his summerhome at Lake Maxinkuckee. Professors Engle-man and Crawford spent the summer in studyat Chicago University. All the others were onvisits or spent their time lecturing or doinginstitute work over the State.Professors Kelso, of the Department ofMathematics, and Engleman, of the TrainingSchool, were the instructors in the MartinCounty Institute, September 7-11. ProfessorEngleman was engaged on Wednesday before,and Professor Kelso, two days later—each oneto fill an unexpected vacancy. Their work iswarmly commended by the teachers and superintendent as well.Professor Charman read a paper before theState Conference of Charities, at South Bend,October 20.October turned my maples leaves to gold The most are gone now here and there onelingers.Soon these will slip from out the twigs weakhold,Like coins between a dying misers fingers.T.
