THE NORMAL ADVANCE21ATHLETICSFootball having been banished from athleticsat the State Normal for the present year, allefforts are centered upon developing a successful basketball team. Mr. E. Conners, considered by many to be the best basketball coach inthis city, has been secured to direct the varsitysquad. Coach Eddy has already put thecandidates into action. Arrangements have beenmade whereby the floor of the City Y. M. C. A.gymnasium is at the disposal of our boys twiceweekly, an excellent move as our own floor israther small. A team of the varsity squad willbe entered into the City Y. M. C. A. leaguegames for practice.A rather novel feature of the pre-season training is the series of cross country runs institutedby Physical Director Kimmel, a course of training which will develop chest capacity for future use.Manager L. James is hard at work on theVarsity schedule and promises a strenuoustime to the team. The first intercollegiate contest will be played early next term. A scheduleof interclass games has been arranged whichwill give every boy in school a chance to getinto lime light. Everything has been providedfor a successful season. It is now up to theyoung men to come out and practice consistently.Y. M. AND Y. W. C. A.The Y. M. C. A. is starting out with verybright prospects for the year. The usual workat the beginning of the school term was carriedout in assisting young men to find suitablerooms^ Good rooms are reasonable in priceand we still have a list of desirable rooms.The chief interest, however, is centered onthe Bible Study. Four classes have been organized and others will be if there is a demandfor them. Mr. W. O. Winklers class in TheStudies in the Life of Christ, will meet eachFriday at 503 N. 5th St. Two classes in thecourse named above will meet in the Y. M. C.A. room at the Normal School Building, oneclass on Saturdays, at 10:00 to 11:00 a. m.,and one each Sabbath at 9:30 to 10:15 a. m.Professor Baxters class in the Social Significance of the Life of Christ, will meet inroom B eaqh Sunday at 9:30 to 10:20 a. m.All boys of the school are urged to join oneof these classes.The regular weekly meetings are held in theAssociation Room each Sabbath, 8:30 to 9:30a. m. At the first regular meeting Rev. Hixsonshowed that it is pre-occupation of mansmind that prevents and hinders him from becoming a christian. The second meeting wasaddressed by Rev. Tullis and the third byProf. Stalker on the theme of the importanceand beauty of Biblical literature. He urgedstudy along that line.E. J. Jaqua, State Secretary, Y. M. C. A.,was with us October 3.Y. A.The Young Womens Christian Associationhas a very encouraging outlook for this year.The enthusiasm and interest which the girlsare showing in the work, the large attendanceat the meetings, and the number interested inBible and Mission Study, are a hopeful indexto what may be accomplished during the yearand also to the benefits which the girls themselves may derive from the Association.The work began with the opening of theterm.
